Position overview

The Librarian is responsible for the establishment, management, and continuous development of library and learning resource services at the Birkbeck Bengaluru Campus. This role supports teaching, learning, and research by ensuring access to high-quality physical and digital resources, promoting information literacy, and maintaining effective library systems aligned with Birkbeck’s academic standards.

Main Duties:

Establishment, Management, and Development of Library

•   Manage day-to-day library operations and services.

•   Develop, evaluate, and maintain library collections (digital and print) aligned to curriculum needs.

•   Maintain and administer Library Management Systems (LMS), catalogues, and discovery tools.

•   Apply metadata standards, cataloguing, and indexing practices to ensure accessibility of resources.

•   Ensure compliance with copyright, licensing, and data protection requirements (including DPDPA 2023).

•   Oversee procurement, access, and lifecycle management of learning resources.

•   Supervise and support library staff where applicable.

•   Continuously improve library services based on user needs, analytics, and sector trends.

•   Maintain safe working practices aligned with Occupational Safety, Health and Working Conditions Code (OSH Code).

•   Contribute to strategic development of library services in line with institutional priorities.

Supports Teaching, Learning, and Research

•   Collaborate closely with academic staff to embed library resources into teaching and curriculum delivery.

•   Provide tailored research support to students, faculty, and researchers.

•   Support academic programmes through resource planning and subject-specific collection development.

•   Assist users in advanced database searching, referencing, and research methodologies.

•   Deliver one-to-one and group support for student learning and academic skills development.

•   Contribute to enhancing student success, retention, and academic outcomes.

•   Build strong relationships with academic departments and key stakeholders.

•   Demonstrate excellent communication, organisational, and interpersonal skills in academic support contexts.

•   Apply a proactive, problem-solving approach to supporting diverse student and staff needs.

•   Uphold and promote equality, diversity, and inclusion across all services.

Digital Resources and Promoting Information Literacy

•   Develop, manage, and optimise digital library resources, including e-journals, databases, and repositories.

•   Deliver information literacy training, workshops, and teaching sessions for students and staff.

•   Promote effective use of digital tools, research platforms, and academic resources.

•   Support use of institutional repositories, open access publishing, and research analytics tools.

•   Provide guidance on digital research skills, including use of AI tools and data analysis platforms.

•   Create user guides, training materials, and digital learning resources.

•   Maintain awareness of emerging digital trends impacting higher education and library services.

•   Ensure high levels of digital literacy and systems capability across services.

•   Explain complex research tools and database searching clearly to varied audiences.

•   Enhance user engagement with digital services through training and outreach.

Person Sepcification General Requirements

Canditates Must Demonstate the Following:

Knowledge

•   Knowledge of academic library  services, systems and operations within a higher education  environment 

•   Understanding of information literacy  frameworks and student learning support

•   Knowledge of digital library resources,  databases, and electronic resource management

•   Awareness of copyright, licensing, and  data protection requirements relevant to libraries

•   Understanding of evolving trends in  higher education, including digital learning, AI tools, and student  engagement

Technical and/or Work-Based Skills

•   Ability to deliver information literacy  training, workshops, and presentations to students

•   Competence in using Library Management  Systems (LMS) and digital resource platforms

•   Skills in supporting research,  referencing, and academic skills development

•   Ability to manage collections (print and  digital), including acquisition, cataloguing oversight, and access

•   Experience using student systems and  platforms aligned to the student lifecycle (e.g. GNUMS or  equivalent) 

•   Ability to analyse usage data  and improve library services accordingly

Expereince

•   Experience working in an academic or  research library environment

•   Experience delivering teaching, training,  or student support services

•   Experience liaising with academic staff  or supporting curriculum delivery

•   Experience in digital resource management  or e-library systems

•   Experience contributing to service  improvement, projects, or innovation initiatives.

Qualifications

•   Postgraduate qualification in Library  & Information Science (ILA-accredited or equivalent) or working towards.

•   Membership of, or eligibility for, a  relevant professional body (e.g. ILA)
